TD5 Service - Oil and oil filter

Oil and Oil filters

This can be done without jacking the car up as there is plenty of room to get underneath the car, However, if you want to be thorough, you can jack the front of the car up. First you will want to drain the oil, this is done by undoing the sump plug.

Let the oil drain out until it has stopped, There are 2 types of oil filters on the discovery 2, there is a oil filter located at the side of the engine and a centrifugal oil filter which can be seen to the right of the engine at the top.

Undo the standard oil filter using either a chain strap or ratchet, be aware that the oil filters will still have oil in them.

The centrifugal oil filter will have 2 bolts holding the case in place, undo them and take the cap off.

Replace both as necessary and replace the seals which should be in the service kit and reverse the process, make sure to line the filters with fresh oil at the point of contact before replacing them.

Make sure that both filters are tight and have no room for leaks

Replace the sump plug and make sure that it is tight so the fresh oil will not leak out.

Oil will need to be 5W30, Fully synthetic. There are loads of other variations that can be used, I use my D2 as my daily run around, done my service around a year ago and she’s still running sweet as a nut!

Open the oil filler cap and slowly add 7.8L of oil, replace the oil filler cap. When checking the dipstick, it will show that the oil is too high, this is because the oil filters have not been filled, start the engine, leave it running for 20/30 seconds, turn it off and it should show up on the dipstick about halfway
